The new version of Skyrim also has new DLC content that you can play by itself. The Vault of the Daedric Prince, for example, can be downloaded for free from the Skyrim Special Edition Launcher page, or the vault can also be downloaded as a seperate file, here .
You can download a .ESM file from Blizzard. These files are the file-extension Skyrim uses for its data. This is the file that is downloaded with the Special Edition, and which gives the game its higher resolution, and changes to the way Skyrim looks. When you unzip the file, you will get a.zip file. This is the file that needs to be renamed to Skyrim.esm in order for it to work. (You can find the.ESM files in the SKSE folder .)
Once you have downloaded and renamed the file, you need to go into your Skyrim directory and open the SkyrimLauncher.exe program. You should now see a Skyrim.esm listed. This is where Skyrim was downloaded to, and where you need to load the new version. If you don’t see it, you can try to launch the SkyrimLauncher, which should help you find the file.
Once you have Skyrim.esm in the SkyrimLauncher program, you can then launch the game. When the game starts, it will automatically load into the new version of the game. You should now see a new game in your Skyrim directory, and you can use all of the new features and changes for the Special Edition.
I've found all the data from my old save files, and I've loaded them back into Skyrim Special Edition on my PC. I can confirm that the game will run perfectly, so long as you don't have any mods installed on your computer. If you do, it will cause problems.
This also works with the Xbox 360 version of Skyrim, so long as you still have a backup of your save files somewhere. I would recommend having an external backup drive in the event that you break or lose your Xbox 360. Thankfully, all Xbox 360 save files are compatible with the Skyrim Special Edition, so you should be fine.
This is where you should have a file called: skyrim.sav. If you load this file, it should load your old character and all your previous inventory, save files, and files for the various ways you can teleport. If you load this file, you should also have the same old horses, weapons, etc. If not, you can use the Edit Character function on the main menu to add your old character again.
