Aankhen was directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Aatish Kapadia. The film was based on Shah's own Gujarati play Andhalo Pato (Blindman's Buff), which he had staged in 1992. Shah said that he was inspired by a news report about a blind man who had robbed a bank in the US.
