The Ithaca M49: A Single-Shot Lever-Action Rifle

The Ithaca M49 was a small, single-shot lever-action rifle chambered in .22 S/L/LR. It had a false magazine tube beneath the barrel that served as a loading gate. The rifle was manufactured by the Ithaca Gun Company from 1961 to 1979, with some sources indicating that production ceased in 1973.

The rifle was designed as a low-cost firearm for beginners and young shooters. It had a simple mechanism that required the user to cock the hammer manually before each shot. The rifle had a hardwood stock, either walnut or elm, and an aluminum receiver. The barrel was 18 inches long and the overall length was 36 inches. The rifle weighed about 4.5 pounds.

The serial number of the Ithaca M49 was located on the left side of the receiver, behind the hammer. The serial number started with 490 and was followed by six digits. According to Walter Claude Snyder, author of "The Ithaca Gun Company From The Beginning" and "Ithaca Featherlight Repeaters: The Best Gun Going: A Complete History of the Ithaca Model 37 and the Model 87", there was no numbering scheme for the Ithaca M49 and no records of the manufacturing dates for each serial number range.

The Ithaca M49 was also sold under the Sears brand name as the "Roy Rogers" model. It had a different stock design with a saddle ring and a medallion featuring Roy Rogers' signature. The Sears model had a different serial number prefix, starting with 273.

The Ithaca M49 was a popular rifle among plinkers and small game hunters. It was reliable, accurate, and easy to use. However, it also had some drawbacks, such as a stiff trigger pull, a lack of safety features, and a tendency to jam if not cleaned properly. The rifle was discontinued in the late 1970s due to declining sales and increased competition from other .22 rifles.

Today, the Ithaca M49 is a collectible item for fans of Ithaca guns and lever-action rifles. It can be found in various conditions and prices on online auctions and gun shows. The value of the rifle depends on its serial number, model, wood type, finish, and originality.

The Ithaca M72 was made in East Germany by Erma Werke and imported by Ithaca. It had a 10-round tubular magazine and a 20-inch barrel. The Ithaca M72 was discontinued in 1979.

Another lever-action rifle made by Ithaca was the Ithaca M49R, a repeater version of the Ithaca M49. The Ithaca M49R had a 15-round tubular magazine and a loading port on the right side of the receiver. The Ithaca M49R was made in Ithaca, New York, from 1967 to 1971. It had a walnut stock and a blued finish. The Ithaca M49R was also sold under the Sears brand name as the "Ted Williams" model.

The Ithaca M49 and its variants are part of the history and legacy of the Ithaca Gun Company, one of the oldest and most respected American firearm manufacturers. The company was founded in 1880 by William Henry Baker and his partners in Ithaca, New York. The company produced various types of firearms, such as shotguns, rifles, pistols, and machine guns. The company is best known for its Model 37 pump-action shotgun, which has been used by law enforcement and military forces around the world. The company is still in operation today, producing high-quality firearms for hunters and shooters. aa16f39245
