Abstract:The new frontier is emerging in wireless networks for data-intensive and mobile applications, and it is the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks in the post-LTE era. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of the performance of FSO links and the corresponding characteristics of the FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks. In addition, we provide a discussion of the possible performance limitations of FSO links and the corresponding characteristics of the FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks. We also reveal the probable development of the FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks by suggesting some potential directions for future research to overcome the performance limitations of FSO links, the corresponding characteristics of FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks, and the potential applications of FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks. We also identify some important considerations for the development of the FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks. Abstract:Recent advances in free-space optics have been proposed for the next generation of wireless systems. However, the performance of FSO links has a detrimental effect on the system, leading to low data rates, high bit error rate (BER), and high latency. We present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art FSO links to reveal the limitations of the FSO links. Our study reveals that the FSO performance in a wireless system is highly dependent on the environmental conditions. In addition, we highlight the importance of the FSO links in 5G and beyond wireless systems. We also discuss the key challenges in the development of FSO links and the corresponding characteristics of the FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks. We also reveal the probable development of the FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks by suggesting some potential directions for future research to overcome the performance limitations of FSO links, the corresponding characteristics of FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks, and the potential applications of FSO-based 5G wireless communication networks.
