The club will be in a position to invest well in the transfer market, as they have a decent number of income streams (Champions League football, St James' Park, the training ground, and the commercial deals with sponsors). Also, they are of course structured differently than other clubs. They do a lot of very expensive transfers, and then also earn money with their other income streams. They have been quite reluctant to extend the contracts of players like Cisse, which was reflected in his salary. He was bought for £1M, and his contract is due to expire at the end of this season. At the same time, the club has managed to break even with him, by selling his services to West Ham.
The first thing to note is that there is a general trend in the management of Newcastle to save money. What is notable is that there is a different approach in the case of Newcastle. Last season, there were players who were reported for over-payment, compared to a general approach in the 2015-16 season. The club seemed to have learned their lesson with a 0.9M loss of players in the summer transfer window, and they'll probably take a cautious approach to the'set-piece' transfer market which they are investing heavily into - so far.
